Root canal treatment

Deep inside every tooth, there is a chamber and root canals that contain a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp is mistakenly called "the nerve" of the tooth, but in reality it consists of connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves. When deep decay, a deep filling, a crown preparation or tooth fracture reach close to the pulp, the result is pulpal inflammation and subsequent infection and abscess formation.

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure aiming to save a tooth whose pulp has become inflamed or necrotic and infected. The goal of this procedure is to restore the tooth in good health so that it can function normally inside the mouth.

During root canal treatment, the tooth's root canals are disinfected with chemical and mechanical means and they are then filled with a special filling material called guttapercha.
