Root canal re-treatment

With the right dental care, root canal treated teeth can be retained in your mouth for ever. However, some times a root canal treated tooth may give rise to pain or even swelling after months or years following treatment, due to re-infection. If this happens, it is often possible to save the tooth with a root canal re-treatment. During this re-treatment, the filling material that was previously placed in the root canals is removed, the tooth is carefully inspected for any additional canals and the root canals are cleaned and filled again.

Alternatively, a root canal re-treatment of an otherwise asymptomatic tooth, which has never presented pain or swelling, is indicated if the previous root canal treatment was technically inadequate and the tooth is about to be covered with a new crown or become part of a bridge.
